TheSenior Medstar Communications Specialist works in the MedSTAR Communications Center and provides services including: Emergency requests to transfers critical patients to MedStar Hospitals for conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, trauma and other time sensitive emergencies; nonemergency transfer requests to MedStar hospitals; dispatches helicopters and ground critical care ambulances; requests for ambulance and wheelchair transports for all MedStar hospitals; coordination of critical responses such as in-hospital Code Heart; coordination of regional hospitals information during disasters; critical radiology communications; and other critical communications for the MedStar Health system.

Primary Duties:

• Acts as a subject matter expert on MedSTAR Communication Center policies, procedures, and tasks. Acts as a resource for Communication Specialists. 

• Responsible for specialized tasks including coordination of fixed wing patient transports, organ team transports, coordination of organ transports and other specialized tasks as assigned Monitors Communication Center operations and communicates operational and personnel issues to management team when supervisors are not on duty. Ensures the efficient reception and transmission of information related to patient transport.

• Utilizes effective interpersonal skills to identify and resolve any/all conflicts, decreases communication barriers, and facilitates group effectiveness. Assures all MedSTAR Communications Center equipment is functioning properly and well supplied and reports any deficiencies or needs to the appropriate resources when supervisors are not on duty. 

• Participates in quality assurance by participating in QA (Quality Assurance) committee meetings and daily by checking paperwork and databases for accuracy and completeness. Reports inconsistencies to Supervisor on duty.

• Functions as a MedSTAR Communications Specialist, including, Receives and process requests for scene medevac from jurisdictional emergency operations centers; Receives and processes requests for emergency and non-emergency patient transfers to MedStar Health hospitals; Dispatches and communicates with helicopters using multiple radio systems; Tracks aircraft and ambulance using Geographic Information Systems; Receives and processes requests for emergency and non-emergency patient transports to and from MedStar hospitals including helicopter, ambulance, wheelchair van and sedan; Completes extensive data entry in multiple systems including: (1) Transfer requests in Golden Hour Dispatch; (2) Transport requests in Allscripts; (3) Flight dispatch requests in Metro Complete Flight; (4) Dedicated ambulance dispatch in Zoll RightCAD; (5) Registrations in Invision; (6) Bed requests in Teletracking; Determines appropriate mode of transport based on patient needs; Contacts physician and other providers using on-call schedules and paging or other text messaging systems; Completes reimbursement paperwork and payor authorizations for transport; Coordinates MedSTAR Transport patient arrivals with receiving departments; Implements response protocol in the event of an aircraft or ambulance crash; Coordinates disaster communications during hospital disaster response (Code Orange) and mass casualty incidents;Participates in on-going education, quality assurance tasks and other projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED 

• Specialized and/or advanced clerical, technical or other vocational training in emergency medicine/communications acquired during 1 - 2 years of additional job-related training.

• 3 years in communications and/or healthcare such as EMT-B, with a minimum of 1 of these years as a MedStar Communications Specialist.

• Current or prior registration as Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B), Emergency Medical Dispatcher, Medical Assistant, or Certified Nursing Assistant. 

• Prior registration should not have lapsed beyond 5 years from date of job application.
